Lavender Silkies

The lavender color does not exist in silkies naturally, but has to be introduced by way of another breed.  Years of work and development were needed, crossing back to silkies to improve type and keep the color.  A noted breeder in TX has been working on lavender silkies for many years, and for the last six years, we have partnered with him to improve type on these uniquely colored silkies.   The lavender color, also called self-blue, is a steel blue color, very even all over the entire bird, with no lacing in the feathers.  Here are some examples of some of our lavender breeding silkies for this year.  Lavender silkies have been shown since 2004 or 2005, and we hope to get the color added to the silkie standard in 2010.   Lavender is a recessive color and requires two copies of the lavender gene to express itself.  However it breeds true, so 2 lavender birds will produce lavender chicks.

A lavender pullet hatched in 2005, she has a vaulted skull, correct toes, very good foot feather and nice type.

One of our original lavender breeding roosters, he has been bred to excellent whites to improve type as well as lavender hens.

One of our original lavender breeding hens, she has produced some very nice chicks.
